David Ward

Managing Partner

David heads up the US operations for MTI based in Boston, MA and also leads the Energy and Advanced Materials investment practice for MTI.

After gaining a BA/MA in Materials Science from Oxford University, David joined Cookson Group PLC. His first venture capital experience was as EVP Sales in an LBO backed by Morgan Grenfell Development Capital. He then became CEO of a technology start-up in the global metals market sector that was part of an additional LBO funded by Granville Baird Private Equity based in the UK.

Based on his outstanding business accomplishments and management expertise in successfully developing growing companies, David joined MTI where he became the firm’s youngest ever Investment Manager subsequently becoming a Partner in 2005 and a Managing Partner in 2008.

David’s operational executive experience in growth companies has helped his portfolio companies excel.

Current portfolio responsibilities are in David’s core competence and experience zone of Materials & Energy. PowerOasis recently came third in the UK & European ‘Cleantech 100’ organized by GP Capital and Oxford Photovoltaics’ academic founder Prof. Henry Snaith was recently inducted into the UK’s prestigious Royal Society for his work on perovskite solar cells. David also sits on the board of Exosect and has a supervisory role at Arvia.

David recently became Chairman of SLIPS Technologies, a Boston–based Harvard University spin-out focused on slippery surface coatings, advising and mentoring the company on its business development and funding strategies. David was recruited to the role by BASF Venture Capital with whom David and MTI have co-invested in the past.

David is well known in the UK/European Cleantech investment network and is recognised for his specific expertise in the Materials sector. David has chaired Nanotech panel sessions for the European

Venture Capital Association and at the International Congress of Nano Technology and is a member of the Alumni Committee of Oxford University’s Department of Materials

In addition he often provides press commentary on the venture capital markets and has been selected as a finalist for “VC Personality of the year award” by the prestigious Investor Allstars event board.
